Welcome to the Forums!
  • Hey guys!

After a successful couple of playtests at GenCon 2010, I figured it would be a good idea to set up a forum for more in-depth discussion of the game and have a place for others to jot down ideas, criticisms, thoughts and so on. I'll continue to post my major gaming announcements over on the blog (http://www.oldschoolhack.net), but I'm also here to answer any questions you may have.
  • I'll see if I can't do a playtest over here after I read up on it. It sounds fun and right up my gaming group's ally (We're doing Mazes and Minotaurs now)
  • I'll try and get the other playtest pages that flesh out the basic game done by the end of the month, we'll see. You're welcome to try to run the game with what we've got in the GenCon package so far, by it really is missing a lot on the DM side of things.

Yeah, I really like what I see, but I'm not totally sure I could run a game with what you've got so far.

I mean, I suppose I COULD, but I don't know if it'd be your Old School Hack.
  • I think that just about anybody who played at GenCon could take the GenCon package and make a game of it. But I'd agree that there were a lot of things that'd be hard to emulate without the benefit of that experience.
  • I love what I've read so far. Hopefully, some of the GC players will chip in and describe their experiences so that those of us that couldn't make it this year have a better understanding.
  • Hello.

I just ran across this game while trolling EnWorld and wow, am I excited to see this finished!

    Great job so far!
  • Welcome to the forums, dude. Thanks for following the progress, we're really close to something playable out-of-the-box, so to speak!
  • Hey, lurkers!

If you're poking around on the forums, don't be bashful and introduce yourself. We're all fun-lovin' gamers here.
  • Belated introduction: Hi! I'm Funeris. You may know me from such unfinished story-hours as The Heroes of Marchford or The Blade of Phoee.

I've shared a drink with Kiz, been a frequenter of the boards EnWorld and Circvs, and have even had Rel in my bed. I've also had Rel's wife in my bed. Hawt, right?

Seriously, though, I hope to be able to contribute something to this game because it is magnificent. I hope some of the other forum stalkers will now come out...
  • Funeris! Whats up? Thanks for the lurker-nudging!

Also, stay away from my wife. ;)
  • Is your wife on these forums, kiznit? ;)

Life is up. And for the most part, it is good.
  • Hi everyone. I'm Rikono and I'm an OSH junkie.

Or at least an OSH junkie wannabe. I stumbled upon this site a couple weeks ago and am looking forward to giving it a go! I recently volunteered to host a regular rpg event at the local library and, assuming it gets off the ground, I think that OSH will be the perfect game to kick off the festivities.
  • That's great! And welcome, Rikono. We're (I think obviously) a pretty casual crowd so jump right in with any and all suggestions.
  • I was honored to play in Kiznit's OSH games during GenCon. I've run a handful of sessions for my home group, and got to run one of the WNC Gameday sessions. One of the hallmarks of a great system for me is seeing new potential awesomeness every time I run it. OSH is solid enough to run smoothly, and flexible enough to do all kinds of awesome stuff on the fly.
  • Just found OSH a few days ago... and I'm really excited about it. =)

It hits just about everything I want out of a fantasy game that is built for adventure... Not to say that I don't love tactical fantasy, I'd just like something where I can focus on having an adventure for once. =D
  • Rel stopped by my blog (www.risusmonkey.com) to say hi and casually mentioned that I might be interested in Old School Hack. Wow, I'm sorry I missed out on all the GenCon goodness. I like what I see so far and can't wait for further iterations of the game.
  • And a big "hi" to you, Kiznit! It's been a while since you made my character into your bitch during Pirate Cat's M&M villain game. OSH is hot stuff and you should be very proud.
  • Hey Tim, great to see you here!

I'm a huge fan of your geomorphs, btw.
  • Hello All!

Was quietly introduced to this game on another forum and got the latest review copy and after breezing through the PDF i immediately printed it out and constructed a Rel-o-Matic Hex counter mounted on Styrofoam... Do I have players for this game yet? Nah, but I intend on playing this bad boy in the near future... Thinking about ideas...and the simplicity of the rules (only 20 pages of "Crunch"? Sign me up). My hat is off to you Kiznit and Rel and all who had a hand in commenting and am mending this game! Looking forward to scouring the threads and posting what ideas and feedback I can as I scrape together a group!

  • Hello everyone,

I got to play a game of this just two nights ago and it was a total blast! I was thinking in my head the whole time “this totally feels like that old Capcom beat-em-up.” I actually was on the verge of Calling my thief Moirah and explaining my halter-top and abs of awesome when the direction of the story changed to a more Egyptian flavored setting and I went with it. Little did I know that the old arcade game was one of the original inspirations!
I wanted to say thanks for such a great game and I look forward to enjoying it for years to come. I, like many here, have been tinkering with ideas for adventures, classes, items, abilities, etc. I can’t wait to dive in and get creative.
    See you on the forums!
  • Hi there,

I printed and played the game a few weeks ago on one of our big Roleplaying forum vacations ( I'm from Germany ) and the game totally rocked. I try to translate it at the moment, more for a german SRD and I hope it's o.k. when I present it to the german community!
I also try to write a small sandbox setting but I need some more "classes" ( I'm one of these races and classes people, who come from AD&D 2nd / D&D 3rd ) for it so I'll search over here and I suppose I will find awesome stuff!
  • Translations are more than welcome! Thanks for enjoying the game. :)
  • Hey, first off - I've already posted in a different thread - I hope this doesn't anger any long standing forum traditions! I'm new at this...

With that out the way - found this game after going on a bit of a link trawl and I couldn't be happier. The group I play with a fairly new to rpgs and have usually been a bit nervous and confused with other games, but once we got this one going they loved it! Having a streamlined, simple game really allowed them to just run with whatever happened and get really caught up in the action. I could go on for many more paragraphs, but I'll just say a big congrats on having designed such a fantastic game, bravo
  • I stumbled across this site when I was looking for D&D retroclones. OSH definitely ain't that sort of clone -- but I was blown away by the possibilities of the rule set I read. I love the mash-up of old-school sensibilities and new-school mechanics in a rules-light package, and I can't wait to try them out for myself.

Very soon a flyer's going up on the bulletin board of my local game store to recruit some guinea pigs -- er, I mean players -- so I can properly beta-test this sucker. I won't try anything too extravagant the first time out: unless my recruits offer a better idea, I'm thinking of running an Indiana Jones-style jungle-and-ruins crawl tossed into the bog-standard fantasy kitchen sink. You know, something dirt-simple to run using the current rules-as-written, with minimal tinkering required. You can expect a full actual-play report with player feedback whenever I get that first session under my belt.
  • Hi, my name is Max, I'm from Moscow (Russia) and I love this little game. I've been lurking around for some time, but decided to come out of the closet.
Yesterday I ran a game of OSH at a local RPGcon and I liked how it handled itself (though I had some really bad moments, which I am ashamed of). The players loved it and I decided to go forward and translate the game to Russian.
To sum it up, kiznit you may mark another country on the world map that you little gem dryhumped with it's sheer awesomness. Kudos (=
  • Thanks, Max!

I'm excited to hear it, can't wait to see a Russian version.
  • I've already posted in a couple threads! But, 'allo! I write blogs and I read blogs and arrived here by way of Rob Lang's free rpg blog.

Plan on running a session or two in about a week. Will report back!
  • Greetings all, I'm fictivite (Andrew) from the American Midwest. So far I have not gotten to play much, just run a skirmish with a friend playing so I could see if I understood the rules properly. I do plan to get a few good game sessions in. In the meantime, I have been busily hacking away.
  • Hello, new to your forums. I have read OSH in the past and felt that it would be good to try out, so I did so with my hardcore PFRPG group last night. It was received very well. So well that they are clammering (is this a word) for another game. I tried to use the rules in a dungeon crawl manner and found that it worked fairly well. I need to truly rethink how the dungeon is presented to make it work more appropriately, as well as create my own cadre of common monsters.

I am also interested in tweeking this rule set into a sci-fi version. I know that you indicate that these rules are open source, but I would still like to ask permission before I steal them from you openly. Not for resale or mass marketing, just for fun. I promise to post them here when done, but I, unfortunately, am not equiped to make them appear as nice as the set you have produced!

    Thanks for the great game.

    Hacks are encouraged!

    Seriously, go nuts.
  • Thank you. Will do. Hope to post something within the next week if I can put it together in a somewhat reasonable manner.
  • I'm a big fan of rules light games and this is among the finest that I've come across. My players are the part of the modern world's slave labor community, so rules light is really our only choice. The way that I see this game is much like that of the many comic strips in heavy metal. In the coming months I'll be be working on a balls out campaign world for this game. I'll drop it here (or atleast a link) later when its finished.
  • Yesterday as I was puttering around on RPG.net and Cardboard Warriors I ran across a favorable reference to OSH and decided to wander on over and have a look. Intrigued I downloaded the book and had a read through. I also downloaded the podcast where the game is played for a couple hours.
    Wow!
The book is very quickly to the point, and well done besides.
The podcast cleared up a few lingering misunderstandings, and was a hoot to listen to as I drove gravel across the city all day. A statue? Really?

I am looking forward with great anticipation to laying this game on a few of my old regulars. I'm also insired to give it a shot with my kids. By far the least daunting of any game I've seen to throw at my 12, 8, and 4 year olds. Almost "Toon" like in its goofiness possibility factor, but also having less in the way of deliberate tongue in cheekness, so it seems like I could run a serious story with it. (I said I could, I didn't say I was gonna!)

Thanks for writing it. Thanks for putting it out for guys like me to see and enjoy. I mean broke. Without the extra greenbacks, dig.
  • I was going to transition my kids from RPGkids to Gurps, but after learning of OSH that is what we be using! I would like to share an OSH Character Sheet Word template using form fields that meshes with the original print-only PDF version. How/where can I post that? Cheers!
  • Post it right here! You can host it on Mediafire or any other datahost you like, and link to it using html code. Let me know if you need any help with it.

Instead of uploading to Mediafire or whatnot, is there not a way to upload to the OSH forum directly? Thanks!
  • Not without me upgrading the forum technology, which I've only been meaning to do for, oh, five months now.

Something a lot of people do is post it on their google docs and just share the link, too.
  • Google Docs rocks!
  • Hi. I'm Tim from Michigan. I'm starting to play RPGs with my kids now after a couple decades of a break. We started in DEC trying to use D&D 4e, and it sort of worked OK, right up until promotion time. Fights took forever, and with a 7 year old that's a problem. So I searched, found OSH, ran a skirmish, and I'm pretty happy with it. Especially with Fictive's template guide. Thanks OSH!
  • Welcome Jonas
  • Hi, I'm Joe and I have to say I love this simple set of rules. Can't wait to give it a test drive with my son and nieces. It should be just right for their ages (9, 7, and 6).
  • That sounds awesome, I love hearing about people playing OSH with kids.
  • It really is a great system to use to introduce kids to roleplaying. I've been trying to figure out an adventure that's designed to use for an introductory event at my game shop.
  • Hi there --- I stumbled across OSH while tinkering with Microlite74. Awesome simple ruleset with a lot of options. Feels like a cross between BECMI D&D and GW's Talisman board game. Right now I'm working on my thesis but once I get out of academic jail I hope to take the game for a couple of long spins.

Howdy, Stranger!
